What is PBIS?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports.  Richards Middle School is a PBIS school. PBIS is a program that helps students develop the practice of positive behaviors.

The Basic Philosophy of PBIS is to:

  • TEACH students how they are expected to behave
  • REINFORCE their good behavior
  • PROVIDE SUPPORT to students as they learn to correct misdirected behaviors

PBIS is a framework for creating and sustaining an effective school-wide behavior system with an emphasis on preventing problems. Shifting the focus to prevention minimizes behavioral problems and increases academic time for students.

What is PBIS at RMS?

Our expectations are: Good Judgment, Responsibility, Integrity, and Pride, or GRIP.  We consistently refer back to these expectations as we teach procedures are Richards. Below are some examples of how the expectations can be followed.

  • Good Judgment: Turn materials in on time, ask for permission, use inside voices.
  • Responsibility: Have necessary materials, have a pass if required, report problems to adults.
  • Integrity: Respect differing opinions, be where you are supposed to be, be supportive of classmates.
  • Pride: Clean up after yourself, own your actions, keep area food/drink free.

What do we do at school?

Students earn Titan Tokens for displaying GRIP throughout the building. Students and parents can view their Titan Tokens in the portal and on apps. Positive Behavior Referrals recognize GRIP behavior that is above and beyond. Students can turn in their Titan Tokens throughout the year to join awesome PBIS events like our Fall Festival and Spring Fling!

How can I help at home?

At home, review the RMS GRIP expectations with your child. Ask your child about his/her day at school, and ask how many Titan Tokens they have! Keep in touch with your child's teacher, and  check the Parent Portal to stay up to date on assignments and grades.
